Termites are small insects that can inflict big damage. Since the effects can be so devastating it’s crucial that you know the signs to look for.  Knowing what to look for can help to prevent expensive and extensive structural damage to your home.

What Does a Termite Look Like?

In order to know you’re dealing with termites you’ll first you’ll need to be able to identify a termite. There are worker and swarmer termites. A worker termite is pale yellow, has straight antennae and does not have wings. Because they don’t have wings they are sometimes mistaken for ants. Don’t make this mistake. It can cost thousands of dollars.

How to Tell a Termite Apart from an Ant

A worker termite is lighter in color than an ant and has straight antennae unlike an ant.

When a termite colony gets too large the swarmers, winged reproductive termites, will leave the nest in order to form a new colony. These types of termites are easier to identity because they have wings. The swarmer termites have two sets of translucent wings that are equal in size. They discard their wings when they find a suitable location to build their new colony. If you find piles of wings around your house it might be a good indicator that you have a termite infestation.
